I also spend a ridiculous amount of time making stuff DD:
gemma: th; belcranmers on May 14th, 2013 11:55 pm (UTC)
And you have a ridic singular prompting agendum (!!)

You are a ridiculously wonderful person, obviously!
youcallitwinter: things we now knowyoucallitwinter on May 15th, 2013 06:24 am (UTC)
LOL, YOU KNOW I'VE ACTUALLY NEVER SEEN ANYONE USE THE WORD AGENDUM BEFORE :D But also, yes I know, hee. This is a terrible situation to be in, I just realized that I've been talking about TVD since more than two years, except so is everyone else on my flist, so that doesn't feel odd. But I've only been talking about VM since a month and half, and it still seems like a lot because no one else is. SO I SINGLE-HANDEDLY PROMPT ALL THINGS \o/
gemma: tt; annecranmers on May 15th, 2013 06:31 am (UTC)
LOL I had to do Latin at school? I did it until A2, so I am very good with all my English words that are derived from Latin because... IDK. I HAD A GOOD LATIN TEACHER BUT A CRAP ENGLISH TEACHER SO MY ENGLISH IS SO-SO D:

Also this said I was a "grammar guru", which makes no sense because I have the worst grammar ever. And I STILLLL have no idea how to work out Hilary's gender! I might look at it again. I did that quiz yesterday morning and 24 hrs later I am still sad about Hilary!

LOL yes talk about non-TVD things!!! Be empowered!!!! Like that one time you prompted The History Boys! That was a good day.
youcallitwinter: we still are made of greed.youcallitwinter on May 15th, 2013 06:40 am (UTC)
They still teach Latin at English schools?! But wow, it always seems so ridiculously hard. And so many words are derived from it, so all the power to you!!

Hahaha, I JUST TOOK THE QUIZ TOO AND GOT HILARY'S GENDER WRONG, I SHOULD'VE PAID MORE ATTENTION. As well as some technical modifier, participle thing, because I have no idea about actualfax grammar things, I've always been terrible at it /o\ But we can be grammar gurus together now.

VM is REALLY making me happy because it's been so long since I've wanted to read fic for any fandom; even the things I like in other fandoms; either there's no fic or somehow I'm not interested in fic. But this is one fandom where there IS fic AND I'm interested, GUH. Nobody writes The History Boys or An Education prompts, BUT THEY SHOULD.
gemma: pe; slyviacranmers on May 15th, 2013 06:53 am (UTC)
LOL I went to a fancy school. Like, IT WASN'T THAT FANCY! Something I have to keep telling everyone. I feel like Benedict Cumberbatch, FML. But it was fancy enough to cling onto the Classics for all they are worth, in the face of all... evidence.

Latin isn't hard! It's actually super logical. I dropped every modern language at school because modern languages = FUCKING HARD. I gave up on being cultured but Latin isn't actually as hard as it seems. The reason it's dying is because it's useless... probs.

OH REALLY?!?! YAAAAY. I was so confused as to how his gender was even discernable at first. It was really... subtle! I got lucky on the Churchill question as well, lol, otherwise I would have slipped from grammar guru spot because I got one of the modifier things wrong as well. BUT YES LET'S BE GRAMMAR GURUS TOGETHER! :D

Oh my god! There should be! There should be The History Boys fic AND An Education fic. Although... fic is broadening out and I love it? I read some Enid Blyton fic the other day? HESLL YESH TO BROADNESS!!

youcallitwinter: all you touch and all you see.youcallitwinter on May 15th, 2013 07:00 am (UTC)
If they were teaching you Latin, it must have been fancy! Haha, J.K.Rowling has a degree in Classics too; v. useful if you want to write famous books apparently. Did you do other languages as well? The only thing I know about Latin is from all the public school boys in children's books cribbing about it, lol.

THAT HILARY'S GENDER THING WAS HARD, I SHOULD GO BACK AND LOOK AT IT. (Actually I should go and study, dammit.) Churchill, I just guessed according to what was wrong with the sentence, but yeah the modifier thing = NO FREAKING CLUE.

Are you serious? Is there GOOD Blyton fic? Because I've been shipping stuff in her books before I even knew what shipping was, since I was like 6 or something!!
gemma: ttss; guillamcranmers on May 15th, 2013 07:18 am (UTC)

Latin's a dead language
As dead as dead can be
It killed the Ancient Romans
And now it's killing me!!!

Yeah I went to one of the ~minor public schools. A lot of my extended family as well as some people who I ~interact with periodically - lyf is lyf - went to, like, Good Public Schools (TM) and have always made the difference between myself and 'them' abundantly clear! So when I went to uni and all the people were like YOUR LIFE/SCHOOLING/UPBRINGING/WHATEVER IS FANCY I was like… errr… what?! Because IT WASN'T THAT FANCY BROSKI. It was the very bottom of the pecking order in other circles. But explaining this is… complicated, LMAO. So I have given up. My life is fancy, what up?

Also children's books are the best! YES?!

Speaking of which, there is much Peter Pan fic but very little good fic which makes me sad because PETER PAN. WE COULD HAVE HAD IT ALL. Although (anecdote that ties up ENTIRE thread coming up), I found this hilarious fic about Captain Hook at Eton. And I thought I bookmarked it. But I didn't! It was like, my punishment for laughing at someone's fic but I searched and searched and I thought I'd find it again eventually BUT NOTHING. UGH. Why can't I have nice things? (Like Hook's Eton days ha ha ha ha ha ha ha)!

There was nothing wrong with the sentence in the Churchill one? That's why I thought it was based on luck? The question just asked which rule Churchill thought was pedantic or whatever? It like, depends on whether you're familiar with the anecdote, which obviously says nothing about your grammar skills. The modifier thing went over my head as well. Never mind though! 8/10!! WE ARE FRICKIN' GRAMMAR GURUS (LMAO)!

Okay… out of the bits of Blyton fic I found, I really enjoyed ONE? I'll PM it to you! But ITA, took me back to a time before shipping when I was already shipping. And I am really attached to my children's books, as you can probably tell lol. Sometimes I think they should be meta'd a fuckload more than like, TVD, *sigh*

EDIT: HP gets a lot of meta, obviously. I wish the Classics-y bit got more meta LOL? I'm glad I gave it up, but.. still!

HAHAHAHA, THAT IS MOST EXCELLENT. I'm pretty sure I know much more about English boarding schools (at least the literary kind!) because I spent all my years from 6-18 reading. AND THEN THE INTERNET CAME IN :O

And when they came up with Eton Style, I started researching on English Public School culture and it seems there's a lot of resentment between the various classes over it, because it's considered to cater solely to the Haves who eventually end up in the Government or something? At least that's the impression I got from the comments to the articles, lol.

BUT LOL FOREVER@ HOOK-AT-ETON. WHAT. WHAAAAAAT. YOU SHOULD TOTALLY FIND THAT FIC OKAY. But I think there IS a lot of Peter Pan fic. How much of it is good is probably the criteria.

I think the Churchill thing wasn't something he really said, it was that there was something wrong with the sentence and the sentence itself was a demonstration of that, idk :s

I AM REALLY, REALLY attached to children's books too! I still read SO MANY it's ridic. Also, lol at you messaging me unoriginal-liz's fic, we've been friends since LWD days and she's like my favorite fic author so I've read that :D Her Narnia fic (AND ALL HER LWD FIC) is great too!

LOL, I'm sure there's lots of meta on the Classics stuff in HP, but it's probably actually academic analysis rather than meta.

HAHAHAHAHA. OH THE GREAT BRITISH CLASS SYSTEM. It's the bain of everyone's existence, NGL. Like this one time quite recently I slightly fucked up the automated ticket system on a bus, and all these cockney types appeared from nowhere - well, obviously, they were there, on the bus, but they were ~dormant and they only got antagonistic after they ~judged me and then SEEMED TO APPEAR FROM NOWHERE - and like, legit jeered me off the bus. (Not the first time I've had public transport issues of that manner!) And it's like... HOW DID THEY GET THE BETTER OF ME WHEN I AM SUPPOSED TO BE THE ~DOMINANT CLASS? Ughhh. Obviously that is a false reflection of my class, but, which stresses me out, because if I am to be percieved as oppressive or whatever then I at least feel I should be benefitting from the oppression, which I don't. OH MY GOD I SOUND LIKE BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH. Never repeat this! ;)

Annnnyywaaaayy, oh my god! So you read about Plebgate? BECAUSE PLEBGATE WAS THE BEST. It was my favourite political drama since The Brothers Miliband. (I am such an observer w/r/t politics? Everyone has a viewpoint on the issues and I just popcorn gif it, tbh!)

The present government has a lot of image issues because literally every time David Cameron makes a prominent appointment (not even just in govt., he also like, appointed the new Primate of All England from the same stock, LMAO) it GOES TO AN OLD ETONIAN. It's beyond a joke. EVERY FUCKING TIME. I personally don't fault him for it? But I think it's a huge mistake not to be seen to be doing something for the sake of diversity, at the very least. Also because a wider range of people will be better, but also becuase NO NEED TO HIRE ALL YOUR FRIENDS!!! They're all rich, posh people, they'll get by!

Also, spot Messirs Cameron, Johnson and Osbourne! :P

This is what they did in their uni days...

But yes, people who went to public schools have an easy time getting into the establishment, by and large. The better the school, the better the chance. (I have no chance, btw, so it's allll goood.)

LOL didn't Hook canonically go to Eton? His last words are "Floreat Etona"? BUT THIS FIC WAS HILARIOUS! HILARIOUS!!!!!!

LOL @ the Churchill thing. It obviously went over my head. I only did it quickly but I have heard an anecdote about Churchill and infinitives or whatever in the past so I got confused, LOL.

Also, lol at you messaging me unoriginal-liz's fic, we've been friends since LWD days and she's like my favorite fic author so I've read that :D Her Narnia fic (AND ALL HER LWD FIC) is great too!

LOL well I had no idea!!! I just discovered fanfiction.com! Like.. less than a week ago. Somewhere on there is a hook eton fic, I think.

I still haven't gone off them. I bought the sequel to Winnie the Pooh well into my teens! And there is nerdy kids book called Mimus that I bought when I was thirteen and have read literally once every year of my life since, as well as the classics, ofc. like Peter Pan and The Jungle Book and everything by Philip Pullman (HIS DARK MATERIALSSS)!!! I am like twelve on the inside, it's a serious issue!

LOL, I'm sure there's lots of meta on the Classics stuff in HP, but it's probably actually academic analysis rather than meta.

Sounds awesome, tbh.
